WPP 2010 - Paradise Now
Peter Bialobrzeski / LAIF
Paradise Now! ´Paradise Now´ showcases both cultivated and natural areas of greenery on the outskirts of Asian metropolises. Unlike the sun, city lights do not follow a set course; neon signs, car headlamps and dazzling skyscrapers give any green areas a hyper-real appearance. Never before have the world´s cities been so enormous – or so brightly lit. Although these stunning images celebrate nature´s resilience in the face of sprawling urbanism, they are also a warning that the extent to which we illuminate our cities is ecologically unsustainable.
Between October 2007 and March 2008 Peter Bialobrzeski travelled through Hanoi, Jakarta, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore in search of urban greenery. The works were first sketched digitally before the photographs were taken using conventional large-format technology and afterwards interpreted using a high-tech electronic darkroom. The result is an eerie form of virtual reality that has the potential to become actual reality if we continue burning the world´s precious resources to light our megacities after the sun sets.
