WPP 2010: Tokyo Subway
Michael Wolf / LAIF
Rush hour in Tokyo. Every morning and every afternoon, in every metro station in Tokyo, you can experience the same spectacle: people waiting on the platform, cramped together. The train comes, the doors open, masses of people pour out, even more force their way in, assisted by guards in uniforms and white gloves, who give them a helping shove, before the doors slam shut and the train speeds off. In less than two minutes, the train is already at the next station and the whole scene is repeated.
But for just a brief moment, the throng stops and the masses are brought to a standstill - a brief pause, just time for a breather behind the closed doors of the train. And it is at this moment, before the passengers leave the train and the throng is set in motion again, that Michael Wolf captures scenes of suspended animation - always the same and always different. World Press Photo named a picture from this series one of the best press photos of 2009. Please find Michael´s series Tokyo Subway Dreams at at www.laif.de/en/article/26229.html.
